Google streetview reached The Netherlands

It’s maybe only a small part yet, but the photo-car of Google Streetview has reached The Netherlands, hitting Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Groningen as a first as you can see as the blue part on the images.
I hope they get the rest of our country soon, would be great to see where we are going and have Streetview on my mobile to show me the way!!!

Single Album display in PWI

On popular demand, I’ve updated the Picasa Webalbum Integration script to enable single album display.

This is a minor update thatdoesn’t change much and is a bit dirty.
Look in the variables in the top of the pwi javascript code file to set is.

HOWTO:

First install the script and don’t try to display have it display a single album.
Load up the page and choose the album you want to display.
Look at the URL in the browser and copy the album-id (between the # and /1)
Use this ID to set in the pwi.js
Simple right? Post a message here if you can’t get it to work (including your URL so I can have a look)

For the coders that want to see the exact differences, so they can manually adapt their script, look at the Diff.

Minor update of PWI (r15)

I have updated the Picasa Webalbum Integration script. This is a minor update that fixes two bugs.
1. The “Back to album” link now works in IE also
2. The paging is corrected on single page albums

Wordpress blogging from iPhone or iTouch

I downloaded the free wordpress app on my iTouch (I haven’t got an iPhone yet) and this is my first post. I like it so far, but the intelligent auto complete is driving me crazy!! Does anybody know hoe to turn that off on an iTouch? Has nothing to do with the app, but it might just keep me from using it.
Ok, so it was a brave try, but my blog has some more features that makes use of custom fields etc. so this is an additional edit, made online on my laptop. Hey, at least I got my first draft via my iTouch.

It’s been fun while it lasted. I’ve tried hard to keep this blog up and running and post at a regular interval.
It seems to be getting harder and harder when work starts to dominate my life.
Although this might be changing soon as I start at a new job, I think I can safely say that this blog will no longer be kept up-to-date.

Will some of the work that was here, show up somewhere else?
I guess I will alway keep experimenting with blogs, logs and twitter like applications in the future.

What will happen with my Picasa Integration Project?
I’m not sure if I will keep developing it. It’s been quiet around it for the last few months and I hope some will continue to work on it.

Many thanks to all my friends and loyal supporters from around the globe… if you are a true friend, we will keep in touch without this blog anyway…. if you are just a viewer, well…I’ll popup somewhere soon enough I guess.

IFFR Day 8 & 9: Slow, slower , slowest

It might be the fact that I’ve seen so many films already and that the energy level has plummeted to a low, but the last films were hard to stay awake with.
The IFFR volunteers party compensated Day 8, but Day 9 brought some other “hard-to-stay-awake” screenings.

Day 8:
Das Herz ist ein dunkler Wald: A modern Medea, with a good cast (Nina Hoss) but a tad slow. Although the end was to be expected, it was catchy enough to stay till the end.

Chouga: A modern Tolstoy classic. Again, the story progresses slow and is pretty predictive. Not much more to tell about, other then to see for yourself if it’s any o your liking. It’s wasn’t my favorite.

PARTY
The day ended in the EXIT, with an exclusive IFFR Volunteers Only party. It took some time to have a decent crowd inside, since there was a competing (public) party with SpeedyJ at the same time, but it ended with a very nice atmosphere that promised a tough waking up the next morning.

DAY 9:

Due to last nights party, I couldn’t get myself to get up in time to see my first movie that I had planned (Una novia errante). Arriving at the cinema I found out that I hadn’t missed a blockbuster.

Come back Africa: A black and white restored classic from 1960. Some probably loved it, I hated it. Acting was terrible and unprofessional and sound quality was poor. And no, this hasn’t any to do with last nights party.

Les amours d’Astree et de Celadon: It looked like the actors were on stage in a theater acting out a classic play. Well, the story of the movie is happening around the 5th century. Terrible acting, truly horrific. The only thing I liked in the movie were the nymphs .

Stellet licht: The slowest of all time. Although the photography is beautiful, the story that can be told in under a minute and the camera shots take ages. The audiences verdict was mixed. From worst till best, it couldn’t contrast more. I had a hard time staying awake, while others didn’t dare to blink. A full 127 minutes of slow moving camera shots and real music to carry it. I was glad it had ended.

Alice’s House: The prior movies of today (and last nights party) took all my energy and I only helped checking the tickets when the cinema opened and watched the last 30 minutes from the stairs, while collecting the Public Award valets from people that left the movie before the end.

A beer at the schouwburg was to make up for the day that is till now, the least successful one. I don’t have to work tomorrow, but got some movies planned. I wonder if I’m gonna make any of them or that I will have some quiet time to prepare for the final weekend, that includes two parties and hopefully 5 or 6 good movies.

IFFR Day 7: Moby Dick, sister love and marijuana

I had no idea what to expect of todays films.
It was my day off and I just picked them because they were playing in Pathe 1, my home base for this festival.
I ended up checking tickets at the door and distribution the Audience Award valets anyway with my favorite crew.
I was happily surprised to see that they were actually pretty good movies!

Captein Ahab: A French story about a young orphan that grows up to become a Whale Hunting Captain. Loosing his leg in a fight with a giant white whale and destined to take revenge. Ring a bell? Sounds corny, but it isn’t. It’s very nicely done and I was bound to see the whole movie till the end, wondering how it would evolve.

3 days to forever: An endless looking journey of two rich kids that decided to drive to Jogjakarta themselves instead of having the driver take them. As the director told us after the movie, it’s hard to get lost when driving due to the 1 main road leading to the main city unless you really want to. Well, they wanted to. Brother and sister get to know each other, with highs and lows and there’s a sexual tension between them that is bound to be released at some point.

Help me eros: A dramatic story about a Taiwanese investor that has crashed and loses himself to drugs. Mixed with pretty explicit sex scenes. Despite the humerus opening telephone call, I wasn’t intrigued by it and soon lost interest. When the director held a Q&A after the movie he obviously had some explaining to do. He wend on and on about drugs and why he had chosen for certain elements in the film. The Q&A ended with a question from the audience that dazzled everyone…. “Why didn’t you make a different movie…”. My god, what kind of answer do you expect when asking such a question….

So far for the films, the atmosphere in the theater and at the employers area was great as usual!
I ended the day with a great diner at LOFT (Westelijk Handels Terrein) with my good friend Rob. Is was for the first time in the past 7 days that work actually came up again….

IFFR Day 4, 5 and 6: 11 movies later

It’s been great, no, not just great, it’s been terrific!
Although I would have liked to cover every single day the day after, the Film Festival is taking about 16 hours of my day. So I’ll briefly cover my movies of the past 3 days.

DAY 4:

Centochiodi: A beautiful Italian movie of which the opening reminded me of “The Da Vinci Code”. A must see!

Secret Sunshine: This movie took a while to settle in my thoughts. The drama is very well put to screen and it was certainly one that took the rest of the day to evaluate.

Alexandra: Russian granny that visits her grandson at an army base. Not bad, but certainly not a highlight of my day.

You, the living: A publics favorite, but not mine. A story based on sketches with a typical form of humor. (almost Monty Python like). I loved the moments where dreams are visualized most.

DAY 5:

Four Women: Four separate stories about the live of women in the Indian culture. I had enough after three, but the beautiful photography kept me watching the whole thing.

Mio Fratello e figlio unico: They predicted it would be great and it was. A very good picture by Daniele Luchetti. Go see it as it will come to a cinema near you!

Persepolis: An animated feature, with famous voice overs. An amazing piece that depicts the Iranian culture very well and at times lets you forget you are looking at an animation.

Mythia: It’s NOT a bollywood movie. A minimal audience enjoyed this great picture. Although the low number of seats taken could have something to do with the fact that it was the last movie on Sunday night, I think the choice of words in description of the movie didn’t do the movie any good.

DAY 6:

Cargo 200: You gotta have a strong stomach (especially at the end) to see this movie at the start of the day. Gruesome and sickening story (although visually not explicit). Not bad though.

It’s hard to be nice: The first 30 minutes didn’t convince me and I left for a drink. Only to return (to guide the audience outside and clean up) and hear that the movie got better and better and turned into a good one after all. I should have been more patient, but hey.. I’ve had 17 movies already and there are still 21 to come. Oh well, I’ll see if it pops up on the internet.

Nothing personal: It had some similarities with last years favorite “Das leben der anderen”. About a detective that spies on a girl and starts to feel compassion. Good, solid, but not great.

Oef… that’s it for now. Really? Yes, it’s time for a nice (Mabelle’s Birthday) diner.
Upcoming: A lot of films and some parties. Stay tuned! (I’ll make up my top 10 list at the end of the festival.)

IFFR Day 3: The world premiere of TBS (and more)

Ah, yes, this would become the best day so far.
Not only contains our shift a world premiere of the new dutch film TBS, but also a personal selection of potentially great movies.

The results:

El otro by Ariel Rotter. A movie that picks you up and slowly takes you on a journey. Beautiful close-ups throughout the film make it a high quality experience.

War, Love, God & Madness by Mohamed Al-Daradji had major impact on me. It grabs you by the throat and makes your eyes water. The deep personal feelings of a director, trying to make a movie in Iraq, the cast and crew, all real life. Although I haven’t seen the film this making-off was all about (Ahlaam), I wonder if it can depict the harshness of trying to rebuild Iraq any better. Funny, how a making-off can become a personal film and can tell a story better then the well-planned, scripted and directed movie they are making in it. A small side note, they only finished this film the day before and saw it themselves for the first time.

Le voyage du ballon rouge by Hou Hsiao-hsien, a French movie directed by a Thai. It explains the somewhat odd clothing in the movie. The movie itself just takes too long to get you into the story and start to feel the characters emotions. A no go for me, and we wend out for diner half way through.

TBS by Pieter Kuijpers. THE movie of today, the long awaited premiere with acte de présence of the cast, Theo Maassen and Lisa Smit. Well, what can I say, go see it in a theater near you. It’s good, solid, dutch and all but a shooter/action movie (as some of the audience I spook expected it to be).

What it left me with? A TBS t-shirt, a FOK! t-shirt that was supposed to be for Theo Maassen, but who left it behind and a ticket for the private Premiere Party. Free drinks and a pleasant (but a bit static) crowd had joined the cast and crew of TBS in the Juriaanszaal.

The day ended in EXIT for a private, IFFR volunteers only, party.
A DJ Contest created a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
At about 4:00 AM, it was time to leave the, mostly intoxicated, colleagues to team up for another great day the next morning (another 4 films to see tomorrow, of which two are in the night shift that I have to work)

IFFR Day 2: Import Export, Wonderfull Town

Day 2 off my IFFR experience this year started with the night shift at the VPRO Preview Day.

Import Export, a slow moving documentary-like movie directed by Ulrich Seidl. Ouch, not my kind of cookie. It set my reality level back a bit and makes me appreciate my personal life more.

Wonderfull Town by Aditya Assarat.
The first Thai movie in my festival days. Another one that didn’t make it to my top 10 list. A well shot movie, creating a nice setting, but again, it just takes too long for the actual story to emerge.
The day ended with a drink in the Schouwburg, where we almost got ripped-off by a bartender that thought a beer is two coupon instead of one.
Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings, oh, I know…. TBS!!!

IFFR Day 1: Opening night feat. Juno and Appleseed:Ex Machina

The opening night at IFFR and here are the result:

Juno
A great story, loaded with humor and a classic ending. I can understand why it is nominated for an Oscar! It fits perfectly in the Rotterdam setting. A must see IMO.

Appleseed: Ex Machina
It’s not my first manga, but I’m not that big a lover of these Japanese anime flicks. It was the opening IFFR Volunteers Movie (private audience) and I think it was a good choice. Although I prefer to see actual human flesh on celluloid, the humanoids in this movie had something going for them, creating the illusion that the feelings and emotions were all but robotic. I haven’t seen the original Appleseed (2004), so no comment on that, maybe you can tell me if I should see the original too? (http://www.exmachina.jp/)

The Tiger Is Coming

The tension is building as the International Film Festival Rotterdam is just around the corner.
I will be one of the many (approx.500) volunteers that will be working at the festival this year.
From Wednesday, January 23rd till February 3rd, film-critics, -buffs, -lovers,- enthusiasts, -makers, -directors, etc will gather in a lot of Rotterdam’s cinema’s.

With a lot of international premieres, it is going to be a true spectacle.
My favorite this year? Well, there isn’t really one in particular. I am looking forward to the following though:
- TBS, by Pieter Kuijpers (starring Theo Maassen)
- El asaltante, by Pablo Fendrik
- Four Women, by Ishii Yuya

and many many more!

Picasa Webalbum integration – Web 2.0 style

Don’t you hate it when pages refresh, loading takes forever, nothing to see…
Well, those are the thing (amongst many others) that set me to challange myself andget working on my PWA script again.

I call it PWI , Picasa Webalbum Integrator.

Some of the features currently in beta:

- No page refresh
- JSon calls on the fly
- Caching on your own server (JSon results only, no images)
- Easy integration (3 lines of code, and some changes of settings for your site)

Bietentocht 2007

After a windless regatta called “Rondje Tiengemeten” on Saturday October 20th (photos here) we set sail for Sint Anneland on Sunday for the start of the yearly recurring event “De Bietentocht”.
It’s a tour for old sailing cargoboats which takes us in 3 days to different places on the most traditional and original way. This means: no engines or electricity and everything is done by hand.

We’ve even made our television debut on “TV Zeeland”!

It’s been a while since my last post.
A lot has changed also, for example my job.
I’ve left my former employer 2organize in favor of a new one: ISM eCompany.
Since my roots lay with internet development, as you can see at this site, I wanted to focus more on online concepts and applications.
My work at 2organize consisted more between the boundaries between online and offline communications and marketing.
ISM on the other hand has a strong focus on online commerce.
The choice was quickly made and after a few weeks of well spend vacation (photos), on september 2nd, I started at ISM as Project Consultant.

Oh, the horror I was only a few hours into my new job and the first challenges offered themselves to me.
A brand new account was won and the project to be initiated at the moment I arrived and has to be finished on November 1st.
Ok, so that means that….while I’m trying to get a grips on the company, my colleagues and internal systems, I needed to get the project up and running and the customer would stand on my doorstep the next afternoon for the kick-off.
As you can imagine, I had no time to loose…get to work.

Long story short, my blog has been a bit neglected.
I promise I’ll take care of it more and also start work on the pwa.js (Picassa Web Integration script) again.

Picasa web album integration UPDATE

I have rewritten some of the code of my Picasa Web Album javascript.
(originally from Haochi Chen at http://googlified.com)
The first version was a success but it still lacked some features that I wanted.
I’ve since improved the code. It now makes use of the JSon API data, where it originally used the JSon BASE data from the GData Api.

Implementing this script on your site.

Step 1.
Download pwa2.js here

Upload the pwa2.js to the root or a subdirectory of your site.
Make sure you set the correct paths of the js src attributes in step 2 when placed in a subdirectory.

Step 2.
Include the following html code in your page:

Step 3.
Set the correct value of the variable username.
The username is the picasa webalbum gallery name that can be found in the picasa webalbum settings menu under gallery-URL, which is most of the time the same as the username.

You should be good to go.

Step 4. (optional)
You can further personalize this script by changing the number of rows and columns you want to see in the pwa2.js at line 3 and 4. The number of rows is defined by the maxreslts / cols.
Photo size and Thumb size can be changed at line 2 (photosize) and 3 (thumbsize).
Keep in mind that the API of google doesn’t support a lot of different sizes, to create a certain thumbsize that google can’t return, you might have to use browser scaling on your images which doesn’t do any good to the quality.

Changelog pwa.js for my v1.5 to v2.0:

- renamed to pwa2.js for ease keeping versions apart
- Added date/time to albums and pictures in albums
- Added Exif block to photo page
- Fixed broken paging
- Added description to album page
- Added location to album page
- Removed watermark for simplicity and it wasn’t really necessary
- Fixed page parameter for Simple PHP Blog integration, no need for editing code or enforced naming of the page, thus making it fully SPHPBlog compatible!
- A lot more I can’t remember right now…

Cover Flow MMS Diary

If you’ve got the latest iTunes version installed, you get the slick Cover Flow album view.
I hate iTunes, but loved the design of the CoverFlow.
After looking around on the web, I found a great piece of Flash code for creating your personal CoverFlow.
Adapting it to the feed of my Mobile MMS Diary, I got it up and running. Retuned it for a more minimal design and here you go, or open it from the menu on the right.

DJ Némo Farinedigue at Whoosah, Scheveningen

Yesterday, on the beach of Scheveningen, there was a great party: Zeeruis.
On of the DJ’s and personal friend, creating a great beat at club Whoosah, was Némo Farinedigue (Menno Meeldijk). Playing three of his personal creations, he had the crowed up and dancing.
With all the footage I’ve shot I’ll create a video clip, soon to be posted on this website.

North Sea Jazz festival in Ahoy Rotterdam 2007

We wend to the closing day of the North Sea Jazz Festival in Ahoy, Rotterdam this year.
After looking at the timetable closely, some performances where selected.
Amy Winehouse had canceled, but we were happy afterwards. Marcus Miller took the slot and put up a great set! He jammed like no other can on his bass-guitar and invited several friends to the stage like Candy Dulfer, who was the next act to go on stage and did one h*ll of a warm up.
Other artists that we've seen perform are Candy Dulfer, Elvis Costello, Fred van Hooven.

The day was closed by nobody less than mister Snoop Dogg himself. Although a bit of mismatch with the rest of the jazz scene, he gave a great party. With a lot of songs from the old days and a tribute to 2Pac. Even some Insane in the Brain of Cypress Hill was a welcome sing-a-long.

I seem to have some issues with my photo gallery.
Viewing a single image triggers a download of the image instead of showing it in the browser. No clue of what is happening yet.

Picasa web album integration in Simple PHP Blog

Some have asked me how I integrated the Picasa Webalbums as I did on my site here.
This is a short tutorial on how to do this the way I did for SPHPBlog (Simple PHP Blog).

Step 1.
Download pwa.js, a javascript originally from Haochi Chen at http://googlified.com.

Upload the pwa.js and lightbox-files to the root or a subdirectory of your site.
Make sure you set the correct paths of the js src attributes in step 2 when placed in a subdirectory.

Step 2.
Create a static page with a static-entry-name: “photogallery”
You may call the entry differently, but then you will have to adapt the js code.
I might implement autosensing the entryname in a future release.

and include the following html code:

Step 3.
Set the correct value of the variables username and photosize.
The username is the picasa webalbum gallery name that can be found in the picasa webalbum settings menu under gallery-URL, which is most of the time the same as the username.

Step 4.
Save the page!

MY PERSONALISED VERSION DETAILS FOR SPHPBLOG
Remember, I adapted the script to work with SPPHPBlog and added paging and lightbox view.

Thumbsize can be changed at line 56 (albums) and 140 (photos). Keep in mind that the API of google doesn’t support a lot of different sizes, to create a certain thumb size you might have to use browser scaling on your images which doesn’t do any good to the quality.

I stumbled upon this beautiful website: www.luchtverkeersleider.nl(air traffic controller)
Talking about recruitment, this is one of the best I’ve seen so far.

Not only are the graphics very good, it’s intuitive, engaging and easy to navigate.
You simply want to see all of the site, you’re triggered to explore.
I was amazed of the amount of information, that I can actually still recall, about the job of air traffic controller and the workings of air traffic control.

If you’ve ever wondered how those planes land safely and the way traffic is managed in the air, take a look at the site! (Dutch only)

Nintendo DS Lite and R4 Revolution Slot-1 card

It's my girlfriends daughters birthday in two days and we've bought here a Nintendo DS Lite (black). Ok, ok…if she's not home or in bed, of course we can use it too

Searched the internet for DS stuff and found some amazing piece of hardware/software, the R4-Revolution for DS.
It allows me to run homebrew apps on the DS without much hassle.
And testing some games before actually spending big bucks on them (which I will, if the games are any good).

Ok, enough for now, she's gone to bed and I received the MicroSD cards today, few…just in time.
I'm gonna install the lot and let you know how it all went!

We’ve broken the World Record

On June 15 we (and 147 others) have broken the record from the World Guinness Book Of Records for the "Largest Flotilla of Tugboats"

The beast is brought back to life

This weekend, we fired up the 6 cilinder beast ( a Worthington BB6, 180Pk) in my Tugboat again.
By blowing air (217 PSI / 15 BAR) through the cilinders to get it turning and then switching from air to fuel it should start to run. The first attempt to get it started failed. After checking al things and bringing the pressure tank back to 15 Bar we tried again and voila… the beast is running, 180Hp at 600RPM, driving a 140cm Prop (4 blade, bronze)…
